About the new background engine
Smoother visuals, lower battery use.
The new engine renders animated backgrounds with hardware acceleration where supported, falling back to static images on older devices. You can disable motion in Settings → Appearance if you prefer.
How it works
The engine compiles each animated background into a lightweight WebGL shader. On devices that support it, the GPU does all the work — the CPU stays free, your fan stays quiet, and battery drain stays low. On devices without support, we render a high-quality static image instead. You don't have to configure anything.
Reduced motion
If your OS has 'Reduce motion' enabled, we automatically swap to the static fallback. You can also force it manually under Settings → Appearance → Reduce motion.
Battery saver mode on iOS and Android also triggers the static fallback automatically.
